The Jazz Composers Orchestra will perform its first concert of the year on Monday October 8 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fresno State Concert Hall. The concert will also feature the CSUF Jazz Band "A", directed by Dr. Michael Caldwell. The Jazz Composers Orchestra was formed in 2004 as a "home" for many of the San Joaquin Valley's finest jazz musicians, educators, and composers. The band rehearses every Monday night in the fall, and performs two concerts each year. The JCO is directed by Mike Dana, head of the jazz studies program at Fresno City College. The roster (below) reads like a "who's who" of jazz in the San Joaquin Valley. Members include music faculty at FCC, Fresno State, and many other valley schools. All play professionally as well, and have performed with an impressive lineup of jazz and pop artists. The ensemble focuses on new and challenging music by today's best jazz composers, including its own members. Dana: "As educators, we think it's important that out students see us out there performing, doing the things we try to get them to do. The Fresno area has a vibrant jazz scene, and we're proud to be a part of that. And, it's a treat just to be playing music with so many great musicians!"

The personnel for the band is: Saxophones: John Ayala, Gene Doi, Larry Honda, Paul Lucckesi, Steve Madden. Trumpets: Michael Caldwell, Scott Dean, Dale Engstrom, Joe Lenigan, Josh McDonald. Trombones: Adan Infante, Les Nunes, Eric Sherbon, Ryan Terronez. Rhythm section: David Aus (piano), Mike Dana (guitar), Brian Hamada (drums), Joe Lizama (vibes/percussion), Rodney Yokota (bass). Tickets are priced at $6 general, $5 for students and seniors. They are available at the door, or online at:

Recently garnering a Grammy Award for his work on Eddie Palmieri's star-studded release, Listen Here (2006), Doug Beavers Rovira has become known for his meticulous attention to detail, natural-born leadership, and his unbridled enthusiasm for music. These endearing qualities have earned him the opportunity to perform throughout the world with prominent figures in jazz and latin music, including Eddie Palmieri, Rosemary Clooney, Giovanni Hildago, and Mingus Big Band, both as trombonist and arranger and composer.

Doug has just finished a jazz orchestra release entitled  Jazz, Baby!, which features a 20-piece jazz orchestra performing traditional kids' tunes in a 1950's - 60's big band style. Featuring Matt Catingub, Linda Harmon & Giovanni Hidalgo and recorded at Lucasfilm's Skywalker Sound, the CD was released internationally October 23, 2007 on the Origin record label and has been receiving extensive radio airplay in the US and will be reviewed in several upcoming jazz and children's publications.

Doug Beavers Rovira is currently in the process of releasing his next jazz release, which features a 9 piece ensemble along with special guests trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and Cuban drumming sensation Dafnis Prieto.
