Jazz @ the Library - The Evolution of African American Music

duke_ellington_03 Join Fresno State Ethnic Studies professor Robert S. Mikell for a discussion about the "Evolution of African-American Music" in honor of Black History Month. Learn about how the music of African slaves in the new world mixed with other influences to create not only jazz, but much of American popular music today, from blues to rock to hip-hop. Local jazz saxophonist Bobby Logan will perform at this free event.

billevansJoin JazzFresno’s Tom Breen for a discussion titled: “A Portrait of the Musical Life of pianist Bill Evans” and learn more about the most influential jazz pianist of the last 50 years. Bill Evans burst onto the scene in the mid 1950’s with a musical conception that was inspired as much by classical music as by jazz. Lyrical, sensitive and probing, his music lives on and continues to be a source of inspiration for virtually all jazz pianists today. This is a free event.

From Mary Lou Williams to Marian McPartland to Maria Schneider, not to mention female vocal stars like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, women have a great tradition of being innovators in jazz. This is a free event.

 larryhondaLearn more about the rich history of Japanese American artists in jazz with a special lecture and performance by local jazz saxophonist and educator Larry Honda, Tuesday night October 14th at 7:00 PM at the Woodward Park Regional Library. Larry will be joined by Mike Dana, Brian Hamada and Nye Morton. Learn more about jazz artists of Japanese heritage from Toshiko Akyoshi to Hiromi with this special educational event, part of the monthly Jazz at the Library series (2nd Tuesday of every month) from JazzFresno.

Learn more about jazz styles, artists, and eras with this free program held every month at the Woodward Park Regional Library. This month's event will be hosted by Mike Dana, and focus on the history of the guitar in jazz. Every month this program will feature a free discussion on a particular jazz topic. Later this year, the program will expand to other Fresno County Public Library branches. Many Jazz @ The Library events will also feature live music. The discussions all begin at 7:00 PM. A pre-discussion open house, with refreshments provided, will take place prior to each discussion event, beginning at 6:30 PM.
