JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

Larry Honda, Chair, Fresno City College Music Department, will give a presentation titled “Japanese Americans in Jazz.” This presentation will survey the impact of jazz and swing music on the Japanese immigrants at the turn of the 20th century and later their American-born children, the Nisei. Particular attention will be paid to the Swing Era of the Thirties and Forties, when jazz was the mainstream popular music and also the time when Japanese Americans were incarcerated in relocation camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Following World War II, the careers of Japanese American jazz artists are followed to the present day.

This program is designed to coordinate with and compliment the Fresno County Libraries’ participation in the California Reads Program, which features Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s book Farewell to Manzanar. This event is FREE of charge.

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday April 10th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

Bassist/composer Kevin McDonald will give a talk titled “Influential Bassists in Jazz History.” The presentation will include biographical information and commentary on performance styles, the contributions of various bassists to the jazz community and to the progression of bass in jazz performance. The talk will also provide insight into the walking styles, and soloistic impacts of bassists from early jazz to the modern day, highlighted by transcriptions and recordings. This event is FREE of charge.

Karen Marguth, nationally acclaimed jazz vocalist, will give a presentation titled “Eva Cassidy: Songbird.” Eva Cassidy possessed a rare musical gift, and had only just begun to share it with the world when cancer took her life. Still, the music she left behind is filled with inspiration and flashes of brilliance that lives on and now inspires some of today's greatest vocalists. Come and hear her story, her music, and interviews with her family and friends.

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday March 20th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

A special annual edition of Jazz @ the Library is being presented by local jazz educator and trombonist Les Nunes, featuring this year's featured book from "The Big Read," Jack London's "The Call of the Wild," first published in 1903.

Les will tell the story of "The Call of the Wild" in his own inimitable style, ably assisted by a cast of local musicians performing original music composed especially for this occasion. Don't miss this month's installment of Jazz @ the Library's "Big Read" edition!

The Big Read is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday January 17th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

George Ramirez, jazz educator and Latin jazz specialist, will give a talk titled “A Look at the Latin Jazz Rhythm Section.” This presentation/mini concert will provide a brief history and some insight into the inner workings of the Latin jazz rhythm section and show that Latin jazz is not just “jazz with congas.”
