Tim RiesJoin JazzFresno for a special concert featuring acclaimed jazz saxophonist Tim Ries, Friday May 5th at Fagan's Irish Pub in Downtown Fresno at 8:00pm. Tim will perform with a quartet of some of Fresno's best jazz musicians, including Mike Dana, Craig VonBerg, John Laufenburger and Brian Hamada. Proceeds from the event will benefit JazzFresno.

From his work as a featured soloist with the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and many other jazz artists, to his work in the pop world, as saxophonist with groups like the Rolling Stones and many more, Tim Ries is one of the most versatile players in jazz today. His new cd The Rolling Stones Project (Concord - 2005) garnered much critical and popular acclaim for his inventive jazz versions of Rolling Stones classics, like Satisfaction and Honky Tonk Women. The cd features an impressive cast of musicians from the jazz world and beyond, people like Bill Charlap, Bill Frisell, Larry Goldings, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade; singers Norah Jones and Luciana Souza; and rock stars Cheryl Crow, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts.

Thursday April 27th - 7:00pm @ Fresno Art Museum

Music for Arshile Gorky: New Armenian Folk Songs is title of the April 27th, 2006 Rhythms of Art concert at the Fresno Art Museum. The concert takes place at 7:00pm. The concert will feature musicians Kevin Hill and Eva Scow in a trio format with Armen in addition to rare solo piano performances by Armen. Don't miss this special concert!

The Rhythms of Art Concert series is an exciting addition to Art Museum programming and is an entirely new concept. Local jazz composer, Armen Nalbandian has been named this year's Resident Artist/Musical Director. Nalbandian will compose and perform original bodies of work directly inspired by the Fresno Art Museum's exhibiting visual artists. Come enjoy original jazz compositions inspired by the works of the exhibiting artists. Celebrate the union of music and the visual arts. Seats are limited so purchase your tickets early.

Three of the Valley’s top jazz guitarists (Andre Bush, Rich Seversen, and Mike Dana) team up with a great rhythm section (Roy Carlson, bass, and Gary Newmark, drums) for a night of, well, jazz guitar! Here are the details:

Rich Seversen is well-rounded player comfortable with jazz, blues, rock, fusion, country and solo finger-style guitar. He also heads up Guitar College, one of the largest internet guitar sites.
 
Mike Dana heads the jazz studies program at Fresno City College, performs regularly with his trio, and presents jazz guitar workshops and master classes throughout the western U.S.
 
Andre Bush’s latest recording is “Start From Silence.” He recently appeared on a Grammy-nominated CD by vocalist Nnenna Freelon. Andre is on the jazz faculty at Fresno City College.
 
Roy Carlson is one of the busiest jazz bassists in the valley. He has performed with jazz legends Gary Burton, Joe Henderson, and many others.
 
Gary Newmark has traveled throughout the U.S. playing drums for many jazz artists, including a stint with vocalist Mark Murphy.

Sunday April 2nd - 7:30pm - Fresno State Concert Hall

California State University, Fresno music professor and trumpet artist Michael Caldwell will perform in a faculty jazz recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the Concert Hall of the Music Building (2380 E. Keats Ave.).

The concert will feature a strong lineup of prominent artists including Tamir Hendelman, pianist with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Jeff Hamilton trio; Colin Wenhardt. a leading  jazz saxophonist and woodwind artist in the Los Angeles area; Sherry Luchette, bassist and vocalist in several Los Angeles-based jazz groups and a former member Maiden Voyage; and Brian Hamada, one of the busiest  jazz drummers in the Central Valley.

The concert will highlight two of Caldwell’s original compositions, “The Little Hunter” (1987) and “Dreamcatcher” (2006).  In addition, the group will perform Donald Brown’s “Episode from a Village Dance,” Ralph Moore’s “Hopscotch,” Hank Mobley’s “This I Dig of You” and Lars Jansson’s “Svennsen,” along with several other jazz classics.

Admission is $7 general; $5 faculty/staff/seniors/students.  Tickets may be purchased in the Music Department Box Office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday or at 6:30 p.m. on April 4. Tickets also are available for purchase online.
