About the Fresno State Jazz Bands:

The Fresno State Jazz Band “A,” under the direction of Dr. Michael Caldwell, recently performed at the CMEA Convention on March 15 in Ontario. The group was also the only collegiate jazz ensemble selected to perform this year, which was also the case for their performance at the 2007 California Band Directors Association Conference on February 17. Jazz Band “A” had five members selected to perform in the California Collegiate All-State Jazz Ensemble which performed at the California Institute for the Preservation of Jazz Festival on April 15 at California State University at Fullerton. The musicians selected were Brian Nunes, Baritone Saxophone (second consecutive year); Scott Dean, Lead Trumpet (third consecutive year); Josh McDonald, Trumpet (fourth consecutive year); Gavin Torgerson, Trumpet; Kevin McDonald, Bass (second consecutive year).

On April 28, Jazz Band “A” was the second place winner in the College Big Band division at the Reno Jazz Festival, finishing with a total score of 293 out of 300. They finished second to California State University East Bay by only two points. In addition, the group produced the Outstanding Overall College Division Performer, Tony Montañez (Drums) and the Outstanding College Division Trumpeter, Josh McDonald. Other outstanding musician awards were presented to Pete Ortega, Tenor Saxophone; Josh Andree, Tenor Saxophone; Andrew Sterling, Trombone; Ryan Terronez, Trombone; Scott Dean, Trumpet; Josh McDonald, Trumpet; Jonathan Hendrickson, Piano; and Tony Montanez, Drums. Jazz Band “B,” under the direction of Mr. Craig VonBerg, received all superior ratings at the same event.

In other news, Protean Visions, a combo made up of musicians from Jazz Band “A,” was invited to perform at the Antioch Collegiate Jazz Festival on Saturday, May 5, at the El Campanil Theatre in Antioch. The group includes Josh McDonald, Trumpet; Jonathan Hendrickson, Piano; Kevin McDonald, Bass; and Tony Montanez, Drums.
