JAZZ COMPOSERS ORCHESTRA IN CONCERT WITH CSUF JAZZ ORCHESTRA

JCO flyer 2017The Jazz Composers Orchestra will perform its first concert of the year on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. at the California State University Fresno Concert Hall. The Fresno State Jazz Orchestra, directed by Alan Durst, will open the program.

Fans of the “JCO” know the band for its adventurous and original music. This season’s opening concert continues that tradition, with music from jazz legends Thad Jones, and Maynard Ferguson, new composers Alan Ferber and Florian Ross, and an original compositions by JCO alums Craig VonBerg and Joe Lewis.

The Jazz Composers Orchestra is an all-star 14-piece ensemble directed by Mike Dana, head of the jazz studies program at Fresno City College. The roster (below) reads like a “who’s who” of jazz in the Valley. Members include music faculty at FCC, CSU Fresno, and many other valley schools. All play professionally as well, and have performed with an impressive lineup of jazz and pop artists.

Members of the JCO include:
Saxophones: Josh Andree, John Ayala, Larry Honda, Paul Lucckesi, Steve Madden
Trumpets: Bill Butts, Lisa Butts, Luis-Angel Gonzalez, Thomas Lake, Mark Prather
Trombones: Spencer Hannibal-Smith, Les Nunes, Eric Sherbon, Barbara Shinaver
Rhythm section: David Aus (piano), Mike Dana (guitar), Richard Giddens (bass), Joe Lizama (drums)
