JCO Bakersfield
The Jazz Composers Orchestra, one of the premiere jazz groups in the Valley, will present its first-ever concert in Bakersfield on Monday, November 2, with a 7:00 pm performance at the Metro Galleries, 1609 19th Street. The CSU Bakersfield Jazz Workshop will open the program. Tickets are priced at $10 general. $5 senior, and can be purchased at the door. As part of the JCO’s commitment to jazz education, students will be admitted for free.

The JCO is a group of the finest jazz performers, composers, and educators in central California. Mike Dana, head of Jazz Studies at Fresno City College, founded the group in 2004. The JCO has performed at the International Association for Jazz Education conference, and has accompanied jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany and Rolling Stones saxophonist Tim Ries.

Fans of the JCO know the band for its adventurous and original music, with many of the group’s compositions coming from within its own ranks. This performance will be no exception. The group will perform an eclectic set, including the music of jazz legends Duke Ellington and Thad Jones, Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, and jazz fusion guitarist John Scofield.

The roster (below) reads like a “who’s who” of jazz in the Valley. Members include music faculty at FCC, CSU Fresno, and many other valley schools. All play professionally as well, and have performed with an impressive lineup of jazz and pop artists. Members of the JCO include:

Saxophones: John Ayala, Steve Dailey, Larry Honda, Paul Lucckesi, Steve Madden.
Trumpets: Dale Engstrom, Tom Lake, Joe Lewis, Mark Prather, Gavin Torgerson
Trombones: Spencer Hannibal-Smith, Adan Infante, Les Nunes, Eric Sherbon
