Dick Douty, classical and jazz tubist, will present the topic “The Roots of Jazz.” Dick will talk about the origin of this evolving, improvisational art form, and the vital role jazz has played in the expression of American freedom.

Dick, along with the other members of the “Raisin City Stompers,” Robert Alfaro, clarinet; Bob Bennett, banjo; Bill Johnson, trombone, and Bill Sharp, trumpet will provide live music.

Mike Dana, jazz guitarist, director of the Jazz Composers Orchestra, and Fresno City College faculty member will present the topic: “The Music of Pat Metheny.”

Pat Metheny is one of the most eclectic and versatile jazz guitarists of his generation. He has led his own groups, performed with artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Ornette Coleman to Chris Potter, and has pioneered new technologies and new instruments. Tonight's presentation features several of Pat's pieces, performed by Mike Dana-guitar, Craig VonBerg-keyboards, Roy Carlson-bass, and Brian Hamada-drums. Mike will also highlight many of Pat's unique contributions to contemporary jazz.

Jazz @ the Library - Listening Forward: Perspectives on Current and Future Directions in Jazz

This months presentation is: “Listening Forward: Perspectives on Current and Future Directions in Jazz.” The guest presenter is world-renowned bassist Lisle Ellis.

At first listen, avant-garde jazz may sound like nothing more than a bunch of notes played randomly and without purpose. But there is much more to it. Get inside the mind of the musicians and learn their thought processes, and influences in a presentation titled “Listening Forward – Perspectives and Future Directions in Jazz,” a lecture, performance and discussion by the avant-garde Tower Jazz, consisting of pianist Ron Smith, bassist Lisle Ellis, and percussionist Gary Newmark that will include historical precedents and influence from jazz and other music and art forms.

and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

The topic for April’s Jazz @ the Library is “Happy Birthday, Lady Day.” Jazz singer and Bakersfield College faculty member Susan Scaffidi will provide a musical tribute to Billie Holiday that will mark the jazz singer’s 100th birthday by telling Holiday’s story through Holiday’s own songs. Although Scaffidi will make note of Holiday’s hardships, the emphasis will be on Holiday’s accomplishments, as well as Holiday’s own persevering spirit.

Performing with Scaffidi will be pianist David Aus, saxophonist Ron Catalano, guitarist Randy Freeman, drummer Gary Newmark and bassist Pete Scaffidi, the singer’s brother.
