When Art Meets Jazz 2016

Purchase tickets online

For the second year in a row, we really can’t tell you what is going to happen WHEN ART MEETS JAZZ on Saturday, May 7. That's the beauty of art (and music) that is based on improvisation. Until the event unfolds, no one knows for sure. If last year is any indication, though, you don’t want to miss it!

If you attended last year’s event, you know that WHEN ART MEETS JAZZ is not the typical art show or jazz concert. Rather than displaying their work while a jazz trio plays softly in the background and the audience sips chardonnay and nibbles on cheese, numerous amazing Valley artists will begin the event with a blank canvas - literally. As the show begins, they will draw their inspiration from the improvised music of many of the Valley's best jazz musicians and the atmosphere of the event itself and create work on the spot.

WHEN ART MEETS JAZZ will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 2:00 pm to 9:30 pm in the beautiful Plaza at Arte Américas in downtown Fresno. The early hours of the event will feature the Milestones Youth Jazz Workshop ensembles, Roosevelt School of the Arts Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the We Got the Beat and Beyond the Beat Youth Percussion bands. Student artists from around the Valley will work alongside the student musicians.

At 6 pm, a collection of the Valley's best jazz pros will take to the stage. Accompanying the musicians will be notable local artists who will follow no rules except to be inspired by the sights, sounds and rhythm of the event.

The event will also include a silent auction, no-host cocktails and local food trucks. The work created by the professional artists, in fact, will also be up for bid before it is created – bringing yet another interesting twist to the event.

Participating musicians include the Milestones Faculty Jazz Ensemble (Joe Lewis, John Ayala, Eva Scow, David Aus, Spee Kosloff and Brian Hamada) the Fresno State University Faculty Quartet, and the Fresno City College Faculty Some-tet.

WHEN ART MEETS JAZZ is sponsored in part by Valley Public Radio. Proceeds from the event benefit the Milestones Youth Jazz Workshop, and other youth arts education programs while art auction proceeds benefit the Fresno Art Museum.

Tickets will be available at the door only if space permits. Last year’s event was a sell out, so get your tickets soon!<

Milestones Youth Jazz Kicks off Year Four

milestones_logo180x165

Year four of the Milestones Youth Jazz Workshop is here, and there are some exciting changes! The program is now located in a single location at 3385 E. Shields in Fresno and includes 60-seat and 200-seat performance/rehearsal spaces, a fenced parking area and a number of other amenities. Best of all, the facility is less than a mile from both Freeways 168 and 41, making it centrally located for the majority of Milestones participants. The new facility offers the opportunity to expand programs and the plan is to offer vocal jazz, Latin jazz and a community jazz band (for adults) in addition to Milestones regular jazz ensemble program.
