Steve Alcala & Rumba 32

Steve Alcalá is a trumpeterstevealcala225 and leader of the Latin jazz ensemble Rumba 32. He is also the owner of Three-Two Music Publishing, and is a local music educator.

Three-Two Music was established 15 years ago by Steve Alcalá, a 27 year music educator in Fresno, CA. When Steve started the Roosevelt High Latin jazz ensemble in 1982 he quickly found the lack of resources for authentic Afro-Cuban arrangements for classroom use. To establish his library, Steve started acquiring music by asking the writers of his favorite CDs to provide transcriptions. After presenting the Roosevelt High Latin jazz band at Jazz festivals, other directors wanted to know how to obtain the same material, thus the beginning of Three-Two Music.

Steve has presented his groups at various conferences such as IAJE, CMEA, FMCMEA, Migrant education and others. His groups have received awards at jazz festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival for high schools in CA, the Reno Jazz Festival and Berkeley Jazz Festival just to name a few. His groups have also performed in and out of the state of California. Steve also teaches music and computers where students learn to use Finale, Sebelius, Pro-Tools and Sound Forge music software. Steve Alcala is also responsible for establishing and teaching the Fresno City College Latin Jazz ensemble (10 years), the Roosevelt mariachi, steel drum, jazz and Latin jazz bands. Steve is currently serving as president of Arte Americas, a Mexican Arts museum. While being involved on the Arte Americas board, Steve is responsible for concerts with artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Eddie Palmieri, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Ray Santos, Orestes Vilato and many other Latin jazz artists.

Steve is married to Sofia and has two children, Robert 17 and Adan 12 as of November 2006. Steve also has coached baseball and follows his sons around the country for baseball tournaments.

The FCC Jazz Composers Orchestra

jcoThe Fresno City College Jazz Composers Orchestra is directed by Mike Dana, head of the jazz studies program at Fresno City College. The group was formed in 2004 as a "home" for many of the valley’s finest jazz musicians, educators, and composers. The band rehearses every Monday night in the fall, and performs two concerts each year. All members play professionally, and have performed with an impressive lineup of jazz and pop artists. The ensemble focuses on new and challenging music by today's best jazz composers, including its own members. "As educators, we think it's important that out students see us out there performing, doing the things we try to get them to do. The Fresno area has a vibrant jazz scene, and we're proud to be a part of that. And, it's a treat just to be playing music with so many great musicians!"

Jim Schmidt

Jim SchmidtJim Schmidt was born in Omaha Nebraska and moved to California at the age of nine.   Involvement with music started with early influences of rock stars such as Jimi Hendrix and Ian Andersen (Jethro Tull).  Attracted to the “Locomotive breath” tone of Ian Anderson’s flute, Jim began studying wind instruments.  Progressing into Jazz was a natural continuation his musical studies.  Jazz provided the depth of complexity and freedom of expression that has held Jim’s attention and kept him involved in the ever growing Jazz scene. Now the leader of “CLOUD 99”,  Jim’s band can be heard at any of several establishments in and around Fresno – usually in the Tower district.  Expect to hear some interesting crossing over into Funk and pop in the manner of predecessors such as Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin & Wood etc.  Jim Schmidt and the ever changing members of “Cloud 99” like to stretch beyond traditional barriers and explore new avenues of music.  Is fun and that’s what jazz  is all about. http://users.gotsky.com/jimschmidt/cd.html
