JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday March 20th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

A special annual edition of Jazz @ the Library is being presented by local jazz educator and trombonist Les Nunes, featuring this year's featured book from "The Big Read," Jack London's "The Call of the Wild," first published in 1903.

Les will tell the story of "The Call of the Wild" in his own inimitable style, ably assisted by a cast of local musicians performing original music composed especially for this occasion. Don't miss this month's installment of Jazz @ the Library's "Big Read" edition!

The Big Read is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Karen Marguth, nationally acclaimed jazz vocalist, will give a presentation titled “Eva Cassidy: Songbird.” Eva Cassidy possessed a rare musical gift, and had only just begun to share it with the world when cancer took her life. Still, the music she left behind is filled with inspiration and flashes of brilliance that lives on and now inspires some of today's greatest vocalists. Come and hear her story, her music, and interviews with her family and friends.

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday January 17th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

George Ramirez, jazz educator and Latin jazz specialist, will give a talk titled “A Look at the Latin Jazz Rhythm Section.” This presentation/mini concert will provide a brief history and some insight into the inner workings of the Latin jazz rhythm section and show that Latin jazz is not just “jazz with congas.”
 

Jazz @ the Library - The Harmonica and its Unique Role in Jazz

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday November 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

Roger Gonzalez, harmonica player and educator, will give a presentation titled: “The Harmonica and its Unique Role in Jazz.” Roger will explore the role of the chromatic harmonica in jazz starting with the genius of Larry Adler’s performances in several motion pictures as well as the virtuosic performances by The Harmonica Rascals. The playing of Belgian Jean “Toots” Thielemans that revolutionized the jazz harmonica and whose playing became the benchmark all jazz harmonists, will be receive special attention in Roger’s presentation. Other current great European and U.S. harmonica players will also be considered. A little “Harmonica 101” will be thrown in along the way. Live music by Roger, David Aus, Roy Carlson, Larry Honda and Gary Newmark will accompany the presentation.
 

Jazz @ the Library - Wynton Marsalis: Jazz Trumpeter, Composer and Educator

JazzFresno and the Fresno County Public Libraries host (free and open to the public) Jazz at the Library on Tuesday October 25, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodward Park Regional County Library located at 944 E. Perrin Ave. (Champlain & Perrin).

 

Joe Lewis, jazz trumpeter and composer, will give a presentation titled Wynton Marsalis: Jazz Trumpeter, Composer and Educator. Joe will provide a detailed analysis of Mr. Marsalis’ unique style and how it has changed throughout his 34-year recording career of this superstar of music. The program will conclude with Joe Lewis and members of the Jazz Composers’ Orchestra performing three Wynton Marsalis compositions.
