From big bands to combos, recordings with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley and countless others, drummer Charli Persip is one of the greatest jazz drummers alive today. Charli Persip's nearly forty year mission includes distinguished residencies with Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Eckstine, as well as gigs and record dates with Tadd Dameron, Frank Foster, Eric Dolphy, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, among many others. Persip was the drummer on the legendary, "Eternal Triangle" recording, featuring Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt. Concurrent with his performing activities, Charli has earned a reputation as a superb educator. As a teacher Charli ranks among the best. He is currently Associate Professor at the New School of Music in Manhattan, fifteen years as drum and music instructor for Jazzmobile Inc. and has a highly successful privet practice. He is a popular attraction at drum clinics and lecture demonstrations at the nations most prestigious schools, such as Howard University, University of Massachusetts, Ohio State University, and North Texas State University. Persip will perform with an all-star local band featuring formerly Fresno based trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, pianist David Aus, saxophonist Larry Honda, trombonist Les Nunes, and bassist Rodney Yakota.

JazzFresno presents vocalist Rebecca Kilgore in concert on Tuesday night April 14th at historic Royce Hall at Fresno High School. Rebecca Kilgore is one of America's leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the great vocal jazz of the 30s and 40s, an era she feels is noted for high quality songwriting and heartfelt lyrics.
She'll be joined in this Fresno concert with by an all star local band
including members of the Blue Street Jazz Band, including Jason Wanner,
(piano); Rick Canfield, (drums) and Pete Scaffidi (bass).
With over 30 recordings in her discography, some of her most notable are with Dave Frishberg on piano, and she has teamed with him on long standing engagements in Portland, Oregon, where they both reside. She's also part of the quartet called BED (“Becky, Eddie—Eddie Erickson (guitar/banjo/voice), Dan—Dan Barrett (trombone)," also featuring Joel Forbes (bass), which captivates audiences with its eclectic repertoire of classic jazz. She has been invited to perform with the Statesmen Of Jazz, dedicated to perpetuating the art of jazz for future generations.

One of Europe’s top jazz stars, pianist and bandleader Amina Figarova brings her sextet to Fresno direct from her home in Rotterdam, The Netherlands for this special concert. A native of Azerbaijan, Figarova began to study piano at age 2, and studies classical music at the Baku Conservatory, and jazz at the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music. She released her first CD in 1994, and has since recorded nine more, as well as a DVD “Live in Amsterdam.” Her most recent CD "Above the Clouds" was released in 2008 and spent 10 weeks in the Top 15 of the JazzWeek USA Jazz Chart. Don’t miss what will be one of the best jazz events of 2009.

The 22nd annual San Joaquin Valley Jazz Festival takes place Friday February 5th and Saturday February 6th 2010 at Buchanan High School
in Clovis and at the Paul Shaghoian Concert Hall in Fresno. The event
features top student jazz ensembles, performing in competition
throughout the day, and special headline artists in showcase
performances. All events are open to the public. This year's guest

About the San Joaquin Valley Jazz Festival:
The San Joaquin Valley Jazz Festival was founded in 1989 by Paul
Shaghoian. After being held at the D&D Ranch in Madera, CA, it was
moved to San Joaquin Memorial High School, and finally to Buchanan High
School in 1992. During the festival’s 21 years in existence the central
valley has seen some of the nation’s top musicians and jazz educators
during it’s numerous two day runs in February. Such notables have
included educators, Larry Sutherland, Gene Aitken, Neil Slater, George
Stone, Aaron Lington and James Miley to name a few. The performance
line-ups have been a virtual who’s who of performers throughout the
state and nation and have included Bobby Shew, Frank Mantooth, Jim
Snidero, Glenn Kostur, Jeff Uusitalo, Carl Saunders, Gary Hobbs, Dave
Rickenburg, John Gove, Lanny Morgan, Tim Ries, Michael Davis, Brian
Lynch, Peter Epstein, Terell Stafford and in 2009 David Binney.
