Recently garnering a Grammy Award for his work on Eddie Palmieri's star-studded release, Listen Here (2006),
Doug Beavers Rovira has become known for his meticulous attention to
detail, natural-born leadership, and his unbridled enthusiasm for
music. These endearing qualities have earned him the opportunity to
perform throughout the world with prominent figures in jazz and latin
music, including Eddie Palmieri, Rosemary Clooney, Giovanni Hildago,
and Mingus Big Band, both as trombonist and arranger and composer.
Doug
has just finished a jazz orchestra release entitled Jazz, Baby!, which
features a 20-piece jazz orchestra performing traditional kids' tunes
in a 1950's - 60's big band style. Featuring Matt Catingub, Linda
Harmon & Giovanni Hidalgo and recorded at Lucasfilm's Skywalker
Sound, the CD was released internationally October 23, 2007 on the
Origin record label and has been receiving extensive radio airplay in
the US and will be reviewed in several upcoming jazz and children's
publications.
Doug Beavers Rovira is currently in the process of
releasing his next jazz release, which features a 9 piece ensemble
along with special guests trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and Cuban drumming
sensation Dafnis Prieto.

Join JazzFresno's general manager John Baker for a free lecture and discussion about the unique and influential sound of the Hammond organ in jazz and beyond. The Hammond Company began production of electric organs in 1935 as a substitute for pipe organs and a replacement for pianos in middle class home, and for use by radio stations. Widely used at military chapels during World War II, soldiers familiar with Hammond organs contributed to the instrument's post war popularity. At the same time, many churches began purchasing the Hammond as an inexpensive organ option. With many musicians getting their start playing in church, they made the Hammond a fixture in black gospel groups, and took it along as they moved into blues, R&B and jazz.
The Hammond organ was “transplanted” into Jazz as Wild Bill Davis developed the organ trio; Jimmy Smith re-invented the use of the organ as an instrument for solo improvisation, and created what we now define as the "soul jazz" sound. In 1955, the famed "B-3" model hit the scene, finding talented young musicians to create broad, new musical directions for the instrument. With the organ in the hands of artists like Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Ray Charles, James Brown, Shirley Scott, Steve Winwood, Al Kooper, and in groups like Santana, Steppenwolf, and The Young Rascals, it developed diverse new listening audiences. It’s fair to say Laurens Hammond, the inventor of Hammond Organs, will go down as the greatest “organ donor” of all time.

April 3rd & 4th at Fresno City College
Join Fresno City College and JazzFresno for the annual City Jazz
Festival, April 3rd and 4th at the Fresno City College Theatre. This
year, acclaimed jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany will highlight the Friday
night concert (April 4th), backed by his group and the Jazz Composers
Orchestra. And on Thursday April 3rd, over two dozen high school jazz
ensembles will perform on the FCC stage during the day, with a special
awards concert with the FMCMEA Honor Jazz Bands and the Fresno City
College Jazz Ensemble, featuring special guest trombonist Andy Martin
and others. Come celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month this April with the best City Jazz Festival ever!
