New Orleans based saxophonist and famed Mardi Gras Indian tribe "chief" Donald Harrison blazes new trails in contemporary jazz with his "nouveau swing" concept - mixing tradition New Orleans second line, bebop,
swing, funk and hip-hop rhythms into a unique new jazz sound. A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers,
and the Harrison/Blanchard Quintet (with Terence Blanchard), he rose
to fame in the jazz "renaissance" of the 1980’s, and remains a strong
force today. An active resident of the Crescent City and a strong
advocate for its post-Katrina rebirth, Harrison was named "Person of the Year" by Jazziz Magazine in January 2007. He was featured in Spike Lee's film "When the Levees Broke."

Presented by Roosevelt School of the Arts & JazzFresno
Latin jazz legend and GRAMMY award winner Poncho Sanchez returns to Fresno Thursday night February 21st for a special concert at the Roosevelt High School Auditorium. Dubbed the "King of Latin Jazz" by JazzTimes Magazine in 2001, Poncho Sanchez has thrilled legions of fans worldwide with his infectious and accessible mix of latin jazz and salsa . A master conguero who also leads one of the tightest ensembles in jazz today, Sanchez mixes Afro-Cuban rhythms with influences from soul to funk. Inspired by the conga playing of Cuban great Mongo Santamaria, he honed his skills as a percussionist and broke into the limelight at the age of 23 when he joined vibraphonist Cal Tjader's famed Latin jazz ensemble in 1975. Poncho performed with him until Tjader's untimely death in 1982. A year later, he began his unprecedented 23-year relationship with Concord Records, which has produced two dozen recordings, a GRAMMY® Award and several GRAMMY nominations.
