Dr. Michael Caldwell, Assistant Professor of Trumpet in the Fresno State Department of Music will be performing in a faculty recital titled, “Whose Tune is it ANYWAY?”—An Evening of Improvised Music with award-winning and Emmy nominated Seattle pianist David Paul Mesler. Caldwell and Mesler previously collaborated on a CD released in 2006 entitled, “The Balladeer.” The duo will perform together based on stories they will share with the audience and will also call upon a pair of Caldwell’s Fresno State colleagues, classicist Dr. Honora Chapman and photographer Dr. Joan Sharma. The musicians will improvise in real-time to readings selected by Chapman visual images of Sharma’s work, which will be projected for the audience. In addition, the artists will be collecting story suggestions from the audience as inspiration for improvisations that will be created and conceived based on those stories. This promises to be a very exciting and unpredictable evening of music as Caldwell and Mesler and both established performers who share a passion for the art of improvisation.
