Billy Strayhorn film to air on KVPT - Channel 18

Billy StrayhornValley Public Television KVPT - Channel 18, will feature a special broadcast of a new film called “Lush Life: The Untold Story of Billy Strayhorn” as part of the series “Independent Lens”, Tuesday February 6th at 11:00pm. Billy Strayhorn was Duke Ellington's co-composer, arranger and right-hand man from  the 1930’s to the 1960’s. Strayhorn wrote some of the greatest American music of the 20th century, including songs like “Take the A Train,” “Satin Doll,” “Lush Life” and many others. Rogue Festival features jazz performances

Now in its sixth year, the Rouge is already one of the top non-juried fringe festivals on the west coast. This year, a number of jazz groups will perform at the Rogue. San Joaquin Valley Town Hall presents Robert Greenberg lecture

Wednesday March 28th - "Jazz, Blues and Rock and Roll"

The San Joaquin Valley Town Hall Lecture Series presents guest lecturer Robert Greenberg, Wednesday March 28th, at 10:00am at the Saroyan Theatre. Mr. Greenberg is returning to Town Hall by popular demand, with a lecture titled "Jazz, Blues and Rock and Roll." Dr Greenberg has been called the "Elvis of music history and appreciation" and has recorded a 48-lecture course titled "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music." He is music historian-in-residence with San Francisco Performances and has performed, taught and lectured extensively across North America and Europe. Dr. Greenberg's presentation will illustrate how music can reveal the social, cultural and aesthetic traditions of different cultures and historical eras. Percussion Festival to feature the Ray Brinker Trio

March 3rd at Fresno State

Ray Brinker The 16th annual Central California Day of Percussion at California State University, Fresno, will feature a performance by acclaimed Los Angeles based drummer Ray Brinker and his trio, Saturday March 3rd at 6:30pm at the Fresno State Concert Hall. Ray's trio includes pianist Christian Jacob, and drummer Kevin Axt.

 

Ray is an alumnus of the heralded North Texas State University's (now University of North Texas) Jazz Studies program, and performed as a member of NTSU's Grammy-nominated 1 O'Clock Lab Band. Upon graduation, Ray toured worldwide with jazz high-note trumpet player Maynard Ferguson before moving to the west coast, where he has become a staple in the Los Angeles studio scene.

Anthony Wilson/Chico Pinheiro Quartet "Nova" w/ Eva Scow

Active ImageGRAMMY nominated guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson and Brazilian based guitarist Chico Pinheiro, join forces for a new project called "Nova" which explores both Brazilian bossa nova and American jazz through a unique lens. Joining Chico and Anthony will be special guest mandolinist Eva Scow. Anthony Wilson is one the top guitarists and composers in jazz today, he leads his own groups, including the Anthony Wilson Nonet, and is also guitarist with Diana Krall. Chico Pinheiro is one of the top jazz stars in Brazil, with a style that draws upon Brazilian traditions, and also jazz artists like Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau. He has been called "the next big thing in Brazilian music" by São Paulo's largest daily newspaper, O Globo. Together Anthony and Chico blend their styles together in a unique collaboration that is equal parts American jazz and Brazilian music, and entirely captivating.
