Protean Visions is teaming up with the venerable cats of 3 Bags Full
and the Tokyo Quartet to play some American jazz music for you. We are
playing at Tokyo Garden (1711 Fulton Street -- in Downtown Fresno) on
Wednesday, July 16th, at 6:30pm. The show will feature all three bands
playing an hour (or more) set each of original music composed by
members of the bands. Here's the 411 on the groups:
Opening the night is the Tokyo Quartet, featuring Fresno's best
young jazz players. This is one of the top high school combos in the
country with Sean Richey (guitar), Justin Richey (bass), Tim Shaghoian
(tenor sax), and Tyler "Big T" Cravines (drums). Their music is
top-notch. You don't want to miss it. Plus, this is their farewell
concert before Tyler goes to University of Reno, Sean goes to Manhattan
School of Music, and Justin goes to Berkelee School of Music.
The meat of our jazz sandwich is Protean Visions. We will be
"road-testin'" new music for another CD (in the works), and featuring
the down-home soul of Jonathan Hendrickson (keys), Tony Montanez
(drums), Kev McDonald (bass), and me (trpt, FX). This is music at the
skookumchuck of post-bop and nu-jazz. Sweet! Come check out our
'birthday show' -- Kev turns 22 that night.
And, closing the night is one of Fresno's hottest groups, the
inimitable, ingenious, incredible 3 Bags Full! Composed of Dustin
Peterson (guitar), Kevin Hill (bass), Ray Moore (drums), and Nate
Ketner (saxes), they will be unleashing music from their new CD, cold
world.
Plus, the food and drinks at Tokyo Garden are excellent. It's a
win-win: good, live jazz, good food, good people, and CDs from each of
the bands for sale. Take the bands home with you! So, to recap:
